At the beginning of the 2013 year, I found myself on a plane
to Texas with no more than a backpack of clothes and an excitement that could
have been compared to a child’s Christmas enthusiasm. God had begun teaching me several years
before about my true identity as a son of the Divine, and what that sort of
life might look like. During this time,
I began to realize how passionate his love for me truly was, and from these
discoveries, an amazing revelation hit me – God loved everyone that I saw each
and every day with this same radical compassion that I had experienced. When I saw how deeply my Father loved people,
I couldn’t help but love them in the same way that I had been loved – both
freely and selflessly.
This love bore fruit as a new lifestyle. I suddenly desired to see others encounter
and experience my God for who I knew him to be, namely, Love. The lifestyle was cultivated as I learned
from my Father, and soon enough, I found myself stopping for others around me,
with no agendas other than to show selfless love and watch the Holy Spirit play
her part through power and joy that followed me through simple day-to-day
living.
This lifestyle was the incentive behind my flight to Texas,
in the same as it was for my following flight from Fort Worth to Mexico City. God was taking what I had seen in my own
community and bringing it to foreign soil through a very simple backpacking
trip – gratifying my lifelong enjoyment of traveling at the same time. I then journeyed further south into Guatemala,
where I was excitedly joined by Joey Jennings (a lifelong friend that has
encountered this same radical love), and the two of us found ourselves
continuing these travels into El Salvador and Honduras. God had invited us to travel with him and
simply follow his voice as we shared God’s love with people everywhere that we
visited.
Then Beautiful Feet stepped in.
Four months after our return, Joey and I heard in our hearts
that we were soon to be traveling again (full story to come in future blog, it
is pretty awesome). This obviously
sparked incredible excitement in both of us, and we immediately began to ask
God about the details of this next journey.
God pointed us to our friends in the ministry of Beautiful Feet, who,
upon hearing the idea, were immediately standing beside us. A large piece of Beautiful Feet’s heart is to
show that God’s kingdom is both a culture and a lifestyle, and not just a
church you attend or a book that you read.
They believe that everyone is called and invited to live with ‘beautiful
feet’ (Romans 10:15) by bringing and displaying the good news that is written
about so heavily in the New Testament.
This lifestyle focus became the inspiration behind what is
now 60 Days Walking. Joey Jennings,
James Buonocore and I (Alex Lewis) will be taking off from Miami International
Airport and beginning our trip in El Salvador on January 6th. As the three of us travel, we will be showing
the love of God in tangible ways as we connect with and highlight the lives of others that
are doing the same. Our return date is March 6th from Costa Rica, but what will transpire between those dates can only be imagined.
We cannot begin to predict all that this adventure will
entail, but with less than a month from our departure I want to welcome you to
the 60 Days Walking blog. As often as I
can, I will be relating everything that we encounter throughout our travels to
this page. Our hope is that the videos,
blogs and pictures that we send back will inspire you to realize just how real
and loving God truly is and draw you to an intimacy with him that is truly life
changing.
Look for more blogs very soon!
Be blessed!
